Public Transportation

SAP Billing and Revenue Innovation Management (SAP BRIM) provides public transportation authorities and passenger rail networks with a scalable, high-volume billing and financial platform. It modernizes old, manual legacy systems into digital, automated workflows.
The primary benefits of implementing SAP BRIM in public transportation include:
Enabling Mobility as a Service (MaaS)
- Consolidated Travel Invoicing: SAP BRIM can compile multiple modes of transit (such as trains, buses, rideshares, and e-bikes) into a single, unified bill.
- Account-Based Ticketing: Passengers can link their account or credit card to a mobile application, allowing them to travel seamlessly across different public and private networks while SAP BRIM processes the background fares.
- Automated Partner Settlement: Public transit ecosystems often involve multiple distinct operators and local authorities. SAP BRIM manages financial data maintenance, automated revenue distribution, and complex intercompany invoicing.
- Error Elimination: It replaces manual distribution spreadsheets, reducing the financial error-proneness and disputes typically associated with legacy transit settlement.
- Flexible Product Launches: Legacy transportation systems often require days or weeks of development to introduce a new fare product. Transit companies using SAP BRIM (such as the Dutch national railway, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS)) can design and deploy brand-new subscription packages or promotional travel tiers in a matter of hours overnight.
- Customized Pricing Models: Operators can easily configure event-based billing, zone-based pricing, peak/off-peak discounts, and personalized subscription choices.
- Journey Pattern Recognition: Through its Convergent Charging component, the system applies complex business rules to protect passenger experience. For example, if a passenger checks into a train station but forgets to check out at their destination, the system can utilize travel history to determine the likely departure spot, automatically preventing unfair penalty fees.
- Real-Time Data Ingestion: High volumes of tap-in/tap-out usage metrics are captured and calculated instantaneously, preventing backlog delays in high-traffic hubs.
- Reduced Revenue Leakage: Automation prevents unpaid fares, unauthorized ticket usage, and unbilled routes that typically slip through manual operations.
- Streamlined Collections: Native integration into ERP and accounting software enables automated dunning, reliable receivables tracking, and optimized contract accounting (FI-CA).

B2C is mostly receipts and statements, B2B is where mandatory e-invoicing bites, and B2G is the most rigid because it requires specific formats and portals.
B2C (travelers)
- Billing: Convergent Charging rates trips and applies fare capping. Convergent Invoicing bundles them into a periodic statement for post-pay accounts.
- E-invoicing: Generally not mandated for consumers. Most countries accept receipts or simplified invoices.
- Exceptions: Some countries require e-receipts or fiscal reporting for consumer sales (e.g., real-time reporting or cash-register rules). Italy and Poland also have consumer-related options.
- Practical point: Decide what counts as a legal invoice versus a statement. Businesses often ask for a proper VAT invoice for a rider's journeys, which needs a request-based flow.
B2B (employers, universities, corporate accounts)
- Billing: Contracts for job tickets, semester tickets, or corporate passes fit BRIM's contract-based invoicing well. Subscription Billing or Order Management handles the pass lifecycle.
- E-invoicing: This is the main mandate area. Common formats are EN 16931-based (ZUGFeRD/Factur-X, UBL, Peppol BIS). Some countries add clearance or reporting (Italy's SDI, Poland's KSeF, France's e-invoicing/e-reporting rollout).
- SAP side: Typically SAP Document and Reporting Compliance, plus Peppol access or a certified provider.
- Watch out for: Consolidated invoices versus per-contract invoices, and credit notes for pass cancellations.
B2G (authorities, municipalities, public service obligations)
- Billing: Invoices for concession compensation, subsidised fares (e.g., student or senior discounts), and PSO payments. These are often calculated in BRIM or settled through revenue-sharing.
- E-invoicing: Often mandatory, with structured formats and portals: XRechnung via Peppol or portals in Germany, Chorus Pro in France, PEF/Peppol elsewhere.
- Watch out for: Buyer routing IDs (e.g., Leitweg-ID in Germany), specific reference fields (contract or order numbers), and approval workflows on the authority's side.
Cross-cutting challenges
- Convergent Invoicing runs on FI-CA rather than classic SD billing, so e-document support can differ by country and release. Verify it for your exact scenario.
- Mandates and deadlines are changing quickly (Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, ViDA), so check current dates for your countries.

Health Check
- Before development: Comparing and selecting the right software solution options. The goal is to verify whether the software solution meets operational, technical, future and budgetary requirements.
- During development (testing): Early detection of bugs, vulnerabilities, and performance issues. This ensures quality and saves costs in the long term.
- During use (post-implementation evaluation): Assessing whether the software solution actually delivers the desired results and aligns with the needs of the end user. This is not yet in scope.
Support & Maintenance
Managed Services
SAP managed services mean taking care of, monitoring, and running a client's SAP environment on an ongoing, day-to-day basis. While project-based SAP consulting services focus on initial buildouts or migrations, managed services provide continuous post-implementation support, maintenance, and optimization.

Proof of Concept
Our SAP Proof of Concept (PoC) services test a small, focused piece of an SAP project with real data before you commit to a full rollout. It helps lower risk and shows stakeholders what the solution looks like in practice.
Core Objectives:
- Risk Reduction: Catch technical or functional gaps early.
- Scope Validation: Prove that a design or integration actually works.
- Visualizing Value: Give business teams a hands-on look at the future system.
Minimum Viable Product
Our MVP allows you to accelerate your learning about a possible solution whilst using minimal resources. It does this by testing only the essential core of your concept (rather than the full solution) with real users in practice. This means that you can find out early on if there is an actual need or demand for the solution, what is working and what isn’t, and make any adjustments accordingly (this is called pivoting in the lean-startup scene).
